The Lowbed Drawbar Trailer is a two-part combination used for transporting extremely heavy and oversized loads.Power Source (Tractor/Truck): A standard semi-truck tractor.
Drawbar (or Dolly): A separate, unpowered unit that connects the tractor to the trailer. It has its own set of axles and a fifth wheel.
Lowbed Trailer: A trailer with an extremely low deck height, designed to carry tall equipment that wouldn't fit on a standard trailer.
The Drawbar sits between the tractor and the lowbed, effectively extending the length of the entire vehicle and distributing the immense weight over more axles.

Tractor to Drawbar Connection: The tractor doesn't have a standard fifth wheel. Instead, it has a Pintle Hook or a heavy-duty coupling on its frame. This hooks onto the Drawbar Eye of the dolly. This connection is for pulling only, not for bearing weight.

Drawbar to Trailer Connection: The drawbar unit itself has a Fifth Wheel (a rotating plate) onto which the Kingpin of the lowbed trailer locks. This is where a significant portion of the trailer's weight is transferred.

The Trailer: The lowbed is characterized by its deck, which is often just a few inches off the ground. Many have a step-deck or drop-deck design, with a wedge-shaped gooseneck that lowers to allow equipment to be driven on.

Extreme Weight Distribution: The primary reason. By adding the drawbar's axles, the total number of axles on the ground increases significantly. This distributes the load's weight over a greater area, reducing the weight on any single axle and helping it comply with state and federal bridge laws (weight-per-axle regulations).


Increased Maneuverability: The additional pivot point at the drawbar connection allows the entire combination to turn more tightly than a single, very long trailer would be able to.


Load Stability: The multiple connection points and axles provide a very stable platform for slow-moving, critical loads.

Ability to Handle Exceptional Loads: This configuration is capable of handling weights that would be impossible for a standard tractor-trailer setup, often exceeding 100 tons.
